Tom, a native Pennsylvanian, follows a line of McKeever men with a heritage that stems from the British Isles. His paternal grandfather worked as a loom operator in a Philadelphia textile mill, and his maternal grandfather was employed as a conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Tom received all his pre-collegiate education in suburban Philadelphia schools. He attended what is now West Chester University where he received a degree in education, majoring in English.
He obtained his first teaching experience in the Oxford Area School District and followed it with several years of classroom and coaching experience in the Collingdale and Ridley School Districts.
Armed with a recently earned Master’s Degree, Tom jumped to the Western New York area for the next 15 years, closing that portion of his career as Assistant Superintendent in the Medina Central School District. Looking to expand his experience in education, he was selected to serve as the Superintendent of the Canisteo School District in the southern tier of New York. It was during this five year stint that he began his “part time career” as a sports announcer on a local radio station.
In 1992 he concluded his 35 year career as Superintendent of North Salem Central School District in prestigious Westchester County.
Following a brief return to Canisteo, Tom and Loraine, his wife of 58 years, took the leap and moved to Florida, first settling in the Fort Myers area before moving to Tanglewood on St. Patrick’s Day of 2004.
Tom and Loraine have three children. Ken, the oldest, is a ceramic engineer and lives and works in the Butler PA area with his wife Nancy and their two grown children. Daughter Kim is married to Wayne and lives and works in Piscataway, New Jersey. Kevin and his friend of 20 years, Darla, live in Cranberry Township, PA.
The McKeevers enjoy sports and live theater and are regular patrons of both the Highlands Little Theatre and the South Florida State College stage productions.
Tom and Loraine have been involved in many, many activities here in Tanglewood. Currently in his seventh year as TMAC chairman, Tom has also chaired the former Special Activities Committee (now Diversions) and the TWRTimes.com. He currently chairs the Special Events Committee.
Loraine, meanwhile, serves as the driving force and sounding board for all of Tom’s more “up front” activities.
Tanglewood has been immeasurably enriched and strengthened by the McKeevers.
