Secret Lifestyle in Tanglewood
There are a few Secrets you may not be aware of to enhance a healthy lifestyle. Living in Tanglewood is definitely one of them. The health secrets of long-lived people with a lifestyle that will help you stay healthy, look younger and feel great as you age. The secret is staying as fit and as mentally alert as possible, for as long as possible So, how do we stay healthy here in Tanglewood? Here are a few of the many activities offered…
Bicycling: The act of cycling helps take in the experience and appreciate it. Strengthens lower body and keeps the circulation going strong. Our group of riders go out for a casual ride in the neighborhoods and around Tanglewood. Averaging 14-20 miles, with plenty of breaks in between. All rides start at 10:00 am on Wednesdays and meet at the comfort station in the Outback. Check the newsletter to see destinations for this month.
Board Games: Yes, board games! Keeps your mind alert, mentally stimulating, thought provoking, and sometimes a little gambling and grumbling to wake up the crowd. Health Food is normally found at most gatherings. (fruit, nuts, okay – cake, pies, cookies) A little sugar buzz to drive your opponent crazy. Strategery, comes in all forms, sometimes it’s chocolate. Yes, I used the strategic way of spelling how one goes about in a certain order to attain their goals.
Line Dancing: Boost brain power, improve memory, strengthen bones, develop balance and release stress safely while having fun! Class on Mondays in the clubhouse.
Walkers: Walking is the best wonder drug for seniors.The National Institute on Aging suggests that regular aerobic activity such as walking has health benefits across the board. The advantages of walking as exercise include alleviation of arthritis symptoms, less anxiety and depression and overall heart health. The group of walkers in Tanglewood go at a pace to kick up the cardio and usually to some great music when inside the clubhouse.
Swimming: Another way to stay healthy. It makes your heart stronger and improves your cardiovascular health and endurance. It will also lower your blood pressure, improve your circulation and help reduce the risk of heart and lung disease. Gentle on the joints too! And, we have a heated pool! (Thanks Jan)
Water Volleyball is a fun water sport. No prior training required. Even the bystanders get a little exercise when returning lost balls to the holding area. Lot’s of fun and laughter. Water Volleyball is one of many highlights visitors and potential buyers enjoy watching and playing.
Pickle ball: A paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. The Basics. A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Tennis is also offered here in Tanglewood with tournaments and just for fun games.
Corn hole Baseball: The game promotes physical activity with players getting to bat, standing on base or walking to the next base, and tossing the bean bags. Low impact, but highly contagious.Strikes occur if the “batter” misses the board on a throw, or tosses the bean bag into the “Foul” hole. This summer over 100 residents played on Wednesday nights from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. This much tossing of bean bags would usually create an appetite for DQ around 8:00 pm.(Half price banana splits).
Let’s not forget the monthly dances. Some residents have been seen running barefoot to the dance floor when they hear Chubby Checkers famous song “Let’s Do The Twist”. One woman told me she had always wanted to be a ‘Go Go Dancer’. Another lady in her 80’s was practicing a line dance with her daughter to prepare for a dance on an upcoming cruise. The music was ‘Blurred Lines’. Life here in Tanglewood is all about having fun and staying healthy. We have 85 year old’s winning gold medals in tournaments for Pickle Ball.
Workout Center: We have our own personal trainer! Weights for all forms of endurance training. Nautilus equipment surrounding the perimeter of the room. Elliptical and tread mills, stationary bikes, rowing, and our personal trainer who will help you set goals, then keep on target with a workout session designed especially for your health needs.
More residents are moving here permanently, and more of them are in their 50’s -early 60’s. If you want ‘peace and quiet time’, go to a nursing home. Tanglewood is by far, the most popular, active 55+ community around.
