The secret is staying as fit and as mentally alert as possible, for as long as possible  So, how do we stay healthy here in Tanglewood? Here are a few of the many activities offered…

Bicycling:  The act of cycling helps take in the experience and appreciate it. Strengthens lower body and keeps the circulation going strong.  Our group of riders go out for a casual ride in the neighborhoods and around Tanglewood. Averaging 14-20 miles, with plenty of breaks in between.  All rides start at 10:00 am on Wednesdays and meet at the comfort station in the Outback. Board Games:  Yes, board games!  Keeps your mind alert, mentally stimulating, thought provoking, and sometimes a little gambling and grumbling to wake up the crowd. Health Food is normally found at most gatherings. (fruit, nuts, okay – cake, pies, cookies)  A little sugar buzz to drive your opponent crazy. Strategery, comes in all forms, sometimes it’s chocolate.  Yes, I used the strategic way of spelling how one goes about in a certain order to attain their goals.

Line Dancing:  Boost brain power, improve memory, strengthen bones, develop balance and release stress safely while having fun! Class on Mondays in the clubhouse.

Walkers: Walking is the best wonder drug for seniors. The National Institute on Aging suggests that regular aerobic activity such as walking has health benefits across the board. The advantages of walking as exercise include alleviation of arthritis symptoms, less anxiety and depression and overall heart health.  The group of walkers in Tanglewood go at a pace to kick up the cardio and usually to some great music when inside the clubhouse.

It will also lower your blood pressure, improve your circulation and help reduce the risk of heart and lung disease. Gentle on the joints too! And, we have a heated pool!  (Thanks Jan)

Pickle ball:  A paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. The Basics. Corn hole Baseball: The game promotes physical activity with players getting to bat, standing on base or walking to the next base, and tossing the bean bags. Low impact, but highly contagious.Strikes occur if the “batter” misses the board on a throw, or tosses the bean bag into the “Foul” hole.  This summer over 100 residents played on Wednesday nights from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. This much tossing of bean bags would usually create an appetite for DQ around 8:00 pm.(Half price banana splits).

One woman told me she had always wanted to be a ‘Go Go Dancer’. Another lady in her 80’s was practicing a line dance with her daughter to prepare for a dance on an upcoming cruise. The music was ‘Blurred Lines’.  Life here in Tanglewood is all about having fun and staying healthy. We have 85 year old’s winning gold medals in tournaments for Pickle Ball.
