Locals Shine in Labelle
The 2018 Riverbend Gamma Classic Pickleball Tournament was held in Labelle Jan. 19 to 21. The tournament always draws top notch players from all of Central Florida. Competition was in ten year age groupings based on skill level. Several local players competed in the 60-69 age bracket at the 3.5 skill level.
In men’s doubles play, Tanglewood’s Aart DeVos and Gene Timmerberg brought home a silver medal in a very challenging bracket of 13 teams.
In women’s doubles, Alisa Blackburn and Tracy Smith of Tanglewood combined for a bronze medal in a division with 9 talented teams.
Mixed doubles 60-69 play saw the local players shine. Tanglewood’s Tracy Smith and Aart DeVos won the bronze medal and Alisa Blackburn and Gene Timmerberg finished fourth in their 16 team bracket.
81 year old Gail Brown from The Villages and Jim Maynard, 80, of Tanglewood, a very experienced partnership, was forced to play in the 60-69 year age bracket due to a lack of players in their own age group. Despite winning one of three matches, they just couldn’t keep up with the younger teams.
