Mary Jones, Artist
Mary joined the Tanglewood Art League last year and we are pleased to have her participating in monthly meetings, workshops and activities. She exhibits her artwork in the Community Room Gallery each month, recently participated in our Annual Art Exhibition and Sale in the Tanglewood Clubhouse and gave a workshop to TAL members on fundamental techniques using Colored Pencils.
Mary is shown, above left, at our recent Art Exhibition and Sale in the Tanglewood Clubhouse and, at right, enjoying her grandchildren: Teddy, Oscar and Mae.
In Mary’s words:
“I have always had an interest in artwork, crafts, quilting and gardening. I did take art classes in high school; however it wasn’t until about seventeen years ago that I began taking a colored pencil class from our local Community Center in South Holland, Illinois.
My instructor, Fred Holly, was a great motivator and teacher. He always challenged us in the work we did. I really began to love working with colored pencil. My medium, Premier Colored Pencil, is a wax based pencil. I learned that, through a slow layering process, the wax colors would blend together making it possible to get very fine detail.
I am motivated to render things that are captivating to me – whether it is a flower growing next door, an animal, or even a loved one. In moving down to Florida, my hopes are to grow into other mediums such as acrylic, pastel, or oil.
I love to challenge myself. I found that joining the Tanglewood Art League has been an inspiration. I see all the wonderful work that other members have created. It is great motivation to move forward — to be inspired and to create.”
We are equally inspired by Mary’s art and enthusiasm, and look forward to her growth as an artist.
