Home made Sweet and Sour Sauce

Forget buying that jar of Sweet and Sour Sauce, With only 6 ingredients you can make your own.  Making your own sauce you can customize it to your taste and consistency.

****Sweet and Sour Sauce # 1****

  • 1 Cup canned pineapple juice
  • 1/3 Cup Water
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons vinegar.  (this depends on your taste…I like my sauce on the sweet side)
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 Cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 Tablespoons cornstarch


  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat until thick-stir constantly
  3. About 5 to 7 minutes

****Sweet and Sour Sauce #2****

  • 1 Cup canned pineapple juice
  • 3/4 Cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 to 1/3 Cup Cider vinegar(Depending on how sour, you like your sauce)
  • 3 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons of cornstarch.  Dissolve in 2 tablespoons of water.  To make a slurry.


  1. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water.  Set aside
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine pineapple juice, cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, and soy sauce.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stir constantly.
  4. Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook until thickened.  1-2 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and use immediately or store in air tight container in refrigerator for 2 weeks.

****SWEET-SWEET CHICKEN**** Nothing sour about it…

  • Left over meat-chicken or pork
  • 1 (20-ounce) can pineapple. I like tidbits, but chunks work too
  • 1 pkg. frozen oriental vegetables
  • 2 Teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons ketchup
  • Rice @ This is when I start to boil my 1 cup of rice into 2 cups of water…


  1. Drain pineapple -reserve juice.
  2. In a small bowl, blend pineapple juice and corn starch.
  3. Stir in  brown sugar and ketchup.
  4. Stir fry cooked meat and vegetables in oil or cooking spray in a large skillet; until hot.
  5. Stir in juice and cornstarch mixture until thick.
  6. Cook until thoroughly heated.
  7. Add pineapple and cook until heated through.
  8. Serve over rice

Sweet and sour sauce can be used for more than creating a meal.  Use it for a sauce over steamed vegetables as a side dish.  It can be used for anything you like as a dip.
