You may not be familiar with the term en plein air. It is simply the act of ‘painting in the open air,’ away from the art studio. The practice was made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their concept was to paint light in the open landscape. Today, plein air painting is a growing trend. Artists gather together in workshops and challenge themselves to work quickly and spontaneously. They paint from observation to capture the freshness of lighting in a landscape composition. It is an rewarding and exciting experience for the artist.
