6 Handed Euchre

6 Handed Euchre
To play this game you need one full deck of Pinochle cards which gives you two cards of each. You also need a score pad and pen.

To Start: Deal cards. Each player will receive eight cards. Bidding begins left of deal and each player gets one bid. The play belongs to the highest bidder. The highest bidder also leads the first card.

You may bid high, low or suit. Example of bidding: first/two low, second/three spades, third/pass, fourth/four high, fifth/pass and sixth/five spades. Bidding aloud in suit, high or low will give your partners and inkling of your hand. If you bid high there is no trump.

High cards are Aces, then K, Q, J, 10, 9. Always the first highest card played will take the trick. If you bid low then the play for power is 9, 10, J, Q, K, A. Again the first lowest card will take the trick. If you bid a suit the power is like regular Euchre.

  • Jack of trump – right bower
  • Jack of same color (off Jack or left bower)
  • Ace, King, Queen, Ten, Nine
  • All other suits follow the usual card power: A, K, Q, J (of opposite color) 10, 9

Each team is given a point for each trick taken. If the high bidder does not take at least as many tricks as they have bid, that team goes down by the number of tricks bid. Example: If the bid was five, they made four, take away 5 points.

If you bid to go alone-the bid is eight points alone. You discard two cards from your hand and each of your partners gives you one card so your hand now totals eight cards again. You get to lead the first card. If you take all eight tricks you receive 20 points. If you take less than eight tricks you go set or get ‘euchred’ which is a minus eight points. If you get euchred you get minus eight points and the opponents receive one point for each trick they take. You may go alone either high, low or suit. If you name a suit, again the power is as

  • Jack of trump – right bower
  • Jack of same color (off Jack or left bower)
  • Ace, King, Queen, Ten, Nine
  • High bid: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9
  • Low bid: 9, 10, J, Q, K, A

Note: Important to remember: The ‘jack of same color’ becomes the same as the ‘jack of trump’ but is second in power to it. Example: The ‘jack of trump’ is a diamond, then ‘the jack of hearts becomes a diamond. When this card is played first (the jack of hearts) then everyone should lay down a heart if they have one in their hand. The only card to beat the ‘jack of same color’ is the ‘jack of trump’. You must follow suit at all times. You do not have to trump if you cannot follow suit.

You win the game when 50 points is reached. If both teams earn 50 points, the game goes to the bidder.
