Bean Bag Baseball – It’s Tournament Time!

Like a perfect launch from Cape Canaveral, the first two rounds of the BBBL ‘Super Wednesday’ Tournament blasted off on November 13, with all of our 12 teams looking to make a deep run. Tourney seeds were in place after the 16 game Fall Season, with 4 teams earning themselves a well deserved Opening Round bye….the National #1 Dynamites, American #1 Somebodies, National #2 BB Busters, and the American #2 Grasshoppers. Let’s get to the Opening Round Results…..

CT…2  (Pioneers at Patriots) The Patriots come out fast scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning but fall to the #6 Pioneers 11-8. The Pioneers built momentum from the 4th inning and hold on for the upset win and a trip to the Elite Eight.

CT…3  (Lightning at Toss Ups) The Toss Ups have had an up and down season as defending Champs, and came into the game as the #4 seed in the American. The #5 Lightning, a good first year team grabbed an early 6-2 lead after the 2nd inning and looked to send the Champs packing. Bottom of the 6th heroics by the Toss Ups brought 3 runs across to steal away a 9-8 win and punch their ticket to the Elite Eight.

CT…4  (WS Express at Firecrackers) I’ve said all season to watch the Whistle Stop Express in the tourney.  The Firecrackers had cooled during the final weeks of the season and this matchup had upset written all over it….and then they played the game….Scoring in every inning the Firecrackers blast the expansion WS Express 12-1, and off to the Elite Eight they go.

CT…5  (BB Burners at Bag Ladies) The National #4 and #5 matchup saw the slightly favored Bag Ladies double up the BB Burners 12-6.  Scoring in every inning, the Bag Ladies hold off a late game Burners rally in the 4th, bringing 5 more runs across and closing the deal.  Bag Ladies go to the Elite Eight.

                                             ELITE EIGHT

CT…2  (Firecrackers at Dynamites) A bye can be a good thing or a bad thing.  Tonight it was a bad thing for the top team in the BBBL, the Dynamites. The Firecrackers kept their hot streak alive by scoring at will and surprising everyone with a 14-4 upset victory over the Dynamites. Firecrackers look to be peaking at the perfect time heading into the Final Four.

CT…3  (Bag Ladies at BB Busters) Looking for a Final Four date, both teams start out slow with the Bag Ladies holding a tight 2-1 lead midway in the 4th inning. The slightly favored BB Busters slam it into high gear and score 7 runs late, taking the 8-3 win and a trip to the Final Four.

CT…4  (Pioneers at Somebodies) After pulling off their opening round upset of the Patriots, the Pioneers faced heavily favored #1 Somebodies in the Elite Eight. Apparently someone forgot to tell the upstart Pioneers they were the underdogs. This game was tied 10-10 heading to the bottom of the 6th, where a clutch triple brought across the winning run for the home team. Somebodies 11 Pioneers 10. Somebodies are off to the Final Four.  Kudos to the Pioneers and our GAME OF THE WEEK.

CT…5  (Toss Ups at Grasshoppers) In the final Elite Eight matchup of the evening, the Grasshoppers and Toss Ups were tied 4-4 heading into the last inning. Every inning featured a team matching the other….until the 6th. Toss Ups bring in 3 runs and head back to the Final Four. Toss Ups 7 Grasshoppers 4.
