Supplies to Bring to the Shelter

Do's and Don'ts

Editor’s Note:  Esaias may not come anywhere near Tanglewood this weekend, but this is some good general information for upcoming hurricanes.  We recommend you print this page out and post it somewhere that you can see it every time you go grocery shopping.

Food: If you have the need for special foods, (diabetic, low salt, Ensure, etc) bring with you a supply for 24 hours. A small dorm size refrigerator will be available to store medications such as insulin. Please have your name on all items stored in there.

Pack snack items; peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix, and other items as listed in the article Supplies for Your Home. Make up sandwiches ahead of time to store in your cooler in water resistant bags. Ice is a sacred commodity, so bring your own during the 24 hour period staying in the shelter.

DO NOT BRING: coffee pots, crock pots, or other heating elements. We have a supply in the kitchen to prepare food after the storm has passed if needed. You are responsible for your own food the first 24 hours in the shelter, with the exception of coffee, hot tea.

Clothing and Bedding: One complete change of clothes including footwear. Sleeping bag and pillow. Each couple will be sharing two pool chairs side by side. Your clothing and food supplies (cooler) must be able to fit underneath the chairs, keeping the aisles clear.  Those with walkers, canes, will be placed on an outside aisle where they can store them nearby. Personal items; washcloth, small towel, soap, toothbrush, extra roll of toilet paper would be a good idea, hand sanitizers, MASKS; must be worn when entering the building. May be removed while eating, sitting in your cot with family/significant other. If you get up to walk anywhere within the building, the masks should be worn.

PETS: Your pet must be registered to stay in our pet area shelter located in the Community Room. Bring a crate, food for 24 hrs, dish for water, sheet, covering for the entire crate, poop bags. We hope to be able to allow at least one potty break outside, weather permitting before the storm hits. Pee pads, poop bags and litter box are your responsibility. There will be two volunteers in the Community Room with the pets at all times.  A sign up sheet will be available for one hour shifts if you can physically help out. You may not sleep with your pets and they cannot sleep with you. But, visitation will be available throughout the day.

MISC. Cell phones, chargers, cards, battery powered radios. Bathe and eat a good meal before coming to the shelter.

NO Candles or Lanterns other than battery powered. NO Fire arms, NO Alcohol permitted while inside the shelter. NO smoking inside the building, but smokers may use the designated door to the covered Veranda to smoke until the doors are permanently locked during the storm.
