FREE Blood Pressure Checks

Summer Schedule For BP Checks

Tanglewood Community Church Health Ministry has re-opened their free blood pressure checks on Mondays, just before Morning Coffee, located in the Craft Room.  Please stop by the check-In table in front of the doorway where another volunteer will provide you with a date stamped index card. If there is a line and you need to wait your turn, we have another happy volunteer just inside the Craft room door to assist you to the next available Blood Pressure station. Depending on availability, as many as four qualified volunteers are taking blood pressures. Most are retired from their medical profession and have years of experience taking blood pressures. None of them will be wearing a ‘white coat’. Once seated in a comfortable(?) folding chair, you will hand over the index card and be asked a few questions.

Next, the medical volunteer will wrap the cuff around your upper arm and begin squeezing a rubber bulb, inflating the cuff tightly around your arm. Please don’t move or talk and keep your legs uncrossed during this process. It doesn’t hurt or sting, and hopefully, no blood will be involved. Your pulse rate is counted and heart rhythm checked as the nurse listens with a stethoscope until the process is completed. They will inform you of the numbers and write it down on the index card. If the numbers are 120/80, you are in pretty good shape for your age!

The top numbers refer to the amount of pressure in your arteries during the contraction of your heart muscle and is called systolic pressure. The bottom number refers to your blood pressure when your heart muscle is between beats,(at rest) and is called diastolic pressure.

During the summer, the Health Ministry Volunteers will be available twice a month. Please review the dates and time scheduled as listed below.

Summer Dates:  July 5, 19, August 2, 16, September 6, 20.
                Time:  7:45 – 8:30 AM

If you would like to occasionally volunteer, please contact me, Pam Batey, Coordinator of the Health Ministry sponsored by Tanglewood Community Church. They meet for services every Sunday in the clubhouse from 9:30 – 10:30 AM.  You do not have to be a member of the church to volunteer.

In October, we plan to offer the blood pressure checks every week before Monday morning coffee. It might be a good idea to get your BP checked BEFORE indulging in the hot caffeine and sugar-coated dough.
