Fear Strikes Out !

“For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 As I listen to the news, as I hear the conversations of those around me, I hear and see fear. It reminds me of when I was a kid, and everyone was afraid their children…

When Outside Un-Cover Your Mouth

It’s the middle of January 2022, and we are continuing to fight different variants of the ‘Cold and Flu’ with methods that would have sounded absurd only five years ago. Maybe it’s time to take a look at some other methods from the past that may still have some merit.  See how many you used…

Helping Hands

Together, Paula Novak and Selena Freeland, along with their husbands Randy and John, have gathered an incredible group of volunteers to help them serve a hot meal once a month at Hands for Homeless in Avon Park. There are so many components needed to make a meal for 150 people happen.  After a few trials…

Blood Pressure Checks on the Rise

Blood Pressure Checks Going Up

“It’s a Process” from December post, continues. 2021 was a year with many stressful changes, some good, some could have been better. Stress is the number one cause of hypertension (high blood pressure). Tanglewood Community Church’s Health Ministry has been offering free blood pressure checks to residents for the past five years.  When I became the Coordinator for the Church Health Ministry in 2017, we kept track of the number of residents who came through the craft room doors each Monday morning before Coffee.

By the end of 2017, we had 1104 residents who had taken an interest in their health through weekly blood pressure checks. In 2018 we had a grand total of 1135. But 2019 gave us our biggest number yet with 1178. In March of 2020 the whole world stopped turning, or so it appeared. Jan-Feb yielded a decent number for only two months at 439. Total all that up and my calculator spit out the number 4328. WOW!

If you are interested in donating an hour of your morning one day a week to help out, please speak with either; Kathi Flyte, Cre LaBozzetta, or myself and we will provide all equipment needed such as BP cuffs, Stethoscope, dated stamps etc. We begin at 7:15 am for the workers in the kitchen/ tech booth.  But 7:30 (Tanglewood Time) is when residents begin showing up for the 8:30 Monday coffee. Clerical helper (Karen Nelson) will check-in residents and date stamp their cards. It’s a great way to meet folks and learn their names. When you want to check out, return your card to Cre before you leave the room. (She keeps the count and alphabetizes them before returning to Karen to file). The process sort of reminds me of the Eagles song “Hotel California”…

“Last thing I remember, I was running for the door. I had to find the passage back to the place I was before ‘Relax, ‘ said the night man, ‘We are programmed to receive. You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave!”     Just kidding…

Brand New Contains The Old

The Reading List (2021) by Sara Nisha Adam.  Of course, I had to read this book based entirely on the title!  I jumped right into it and was caught up right away. You will meet two completely different characters, Mukesh and Aleisha, both of whom you would expect to have absolutely nothing in common.  And…

Chez Mirelille Authentic Belgium Waffles

Typically I like sharing our dining out adventures as we explore restaurants in and around the Sebring area.  This time, I’m taking a little detour from that to tell you about Chez Mirelille (pronounced “Shay” + “Me-ray”).  What is that you ask?!!  Chez Mirelille is a new authentic Belgian waffle shop located at 2179 US…

New Year: New Attitude

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.” ESV 42:5-6a As we look back at 2021, it has been a tough year. A year of family members and friends who have died from…

It’s The Holiday Season

I recently attended the monthly Welcome Committee dinner at The Jacaranda Hotel.  Located at 19 East Main Street in Avon Park, the historic hotel is completely decked out with beautiful Christmas decorations that will remind you of days gone by and certainly put some jingle in your holiday spirit. The all-you-can-eat dinner buffet includes an…
