The Lost and Found Bookshop (2020) by Susan Wiggs

  1. If you have a “thing” about searching through bookshops, this book is just for you.
  2. And if you enjoy a book with interesting characters of different ages that keep you turning the pages, read on.
  3. And, if you are a mystery buff, you will enjoy the historic references of interest. There is a little something between the pages for each reader.

You will also get to know Grandpa Andrew who shares the history and the mystery surrounding the bookstore.  Carpenter Peach Gallagher, along with his daughter Dorothy, show up and add even more interest to the story line along with those who come and go daily.

It opens with Natalie Harper celebrating a major promotion with fellow workers and friends. “But her own mother was a “no show.”  ..Her boyfriend Rick had a test flight and could not be part of her big day.

As she was driving with music playing, an announcement interrupts:  The FFA   is investigating the crash of a small plane…involving her boyfriend Rick’s company.  She tried to reach him, but no answer.  It was Rick’s plane.  He and his passenger both died.

You will also get to know Grandpa Andrew who shares the history and the mystery surrounding the bookshop, also with carpenter Peach Gallagher, along with his daughter Dorothy.

Remember… You are never alone when you read a book.

One Puzzling Afternoon (2023) by Emily Critchley

Have you ever kept a secret?  I mean REALLY kept a secret, maybe even for years?  This story is told through memories of now 82-year-old Edie who is in the early stages of dementia.

The secret Edie has kept dates to 1951, set in England.  Stick with Edie as she is still dealing with what she saw when she was 16. It involves her friend Lucy Theddle.  Edie is in heaven having a popular friend.

Lucy shares a secret with Edie.  A secret Edie feels she really should not keep.

Edie, a former English teacher is aware she has some memory issues.  It is very frustrating for her.  Can you relate?  You know…the words that were always right there, now seem to be just out of her reach.

Now flash-forward to 2018.  Edie still has Lucy in her mind and heart.

Eddie’s son and family want her to move in with them where she would have her own special place.  Of course, Edie is reluctant to leave her home and town where she grew up.  But she is a widow and alone but still recalls something about what happened to her son and family many years ago.

A lot is going on in the slow-paced novel about family drama and dealing with dementia.

Even after all the time that has passed, Edie still tries to put the events together which led up to the disappearance of 15-year-old Lucy.   When Edie is sure she spots Lucy from a distance, looking just like she did at fifteen.

Several other characters enter this tale at different points along the way. All of whom have some sort of connection to this tale of a young missing girl which helps make for a most interesting tale.

Does Edie know what happened to Lucy when they were young?  Or, has her mind hidden it from her?  Take your time reading this mystery and family drama.  You can decide for yourself.
