During the April Wood Shop Meeting, a heartfelt dedication was made in honor of the late Joe Frohwitter. Joe’s wife, Pam, attended the event. Joe served as Chairman from 2020 to 2021 and sadly passed away while holding the position.
Joe’s enthusiasm for woodworking was evident in the time he devoted to making wooden rocking horses for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After moving to Tanglewood, he continued this tradition. To manage the dust created during sanding, Joe established a sanding booth and a vacuum system, which remains in use today. His leadership and expertise resulted in numerous improvements to the wood shop.
With plans to move north to be closer to her family, Pam decided to donate one of Joe’s unfinished projects to the Wood Shop—half of a wooden horse. Joe had accidentally crafted two left sides of a horse, and he kept one side, hanging it in their home before it was eventually stored away.
Herb Dann, a fellow woodworker who played a key role in organizing the dedication, discovered the wooden horse piece. He requested permission to polish its face and hang it in the Wood Shop. Steve Batey, the current Chairman, created a plaque to commemorate Joe, which is now displayed beneath the horse. Today, the half-horse hangs above the door that separates the Wood Shop from the Glass Shop.
Don Colton, a woodshop member and close friend of Joe’s, spoke about Joe’s character. Their friendship began years ago when they served together in the Navy. Don described Joe as an outstanding leader, a loyal friend, and a talented woodworker.
A Story That Lives On
Joe Frohwitter will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His story will continue as new members join the Wood Shop and notice the half of a rocking horse above the inside door. It may prompt curiosity about the missing half, inviting newcomers to learn about Joe’s lasting impact. Special thanks go to Herb Dan, Don Colton, and all the Wood Shop Members for their dedication and kind words honoring Joe and his love for woodworking.
