Friendship With God: The Abraham Journey (Part 4)

When Faith Is Tested

Genesis 22:1–14

Introduction: There are some tests you can study for, and there are other tests that do not measure what you know so much as reveal whom you trust.

  • A classroom quiz can be crammed for.
  • A hospital waiting room cannot.
  • A midnight phone call cannot.

As we come to Genesis 22 Abraham is no beginner in faith. He is an old student in the school of faith, and yet Genesis 22 opens with the words, “After these things God tested Abraham.”

Our text today shows us, God grows our trust through sacrifice and obedience.

A Man Who Builds Altars

Genesis 13:1–18

Introduction: Spiritual fathers are builders; they build places of worship and peace for their homes and families. We all know Father’s Day sermons can become sentimental in a hurry. But Genesis 13 takes us deeper than sentiment. It asks a more searching question: What kind of man are you building into your home?

Genesis 13 comes after Genesis 12, and that means it comes after failure.

Abram had gone down to Egypt in fear. He had compromised. He had lied. He had made a mess. Yet when chapter 13 opens, grace is still at work.

Hospitality That Brings Heaven Near

Genesis 18:1–15

Introduction: James 2:23 says of Abraham, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and “he was called a friend of God.” That is the series frame For our whole summer: what does it look like for a man or woman to walk with God in trust, obedience, and relational closeness? Genesis 18 answers that question in a way that is wonderfully practical. And before the scene is over, that ordinary doorway becomes a meeting place between heaven and earth.

That is why I am preaching on this subject: Hospitality That Brings Heaven Near.

Abraham’s open tent shows God meets us in simple hospitality. (we will notice this in four movements.

The Call to Walk With God

Genesis 12:1–9

Introduction: Today, family, we begin a new journey together: A sermon series I have titled: “Friendship With God: The Abraham Journey (In Genesis).

And there is no better place to start than where Abraham started—with the call of God. James 2:23 will eventually call Abraham “the friend of God,” but that friendship did not begin with Abraham climbing up to God. It began with God coming down in grace to Abraham. That is always where a real walk with God begins.

Faith begins with trusting God enough to follow Him. We’ll see this in four movements.
