If you are living here in Tanglewood when we have a Hurricane threat, you can bring your fur baby with you to the clubhouse provided you have registered yourself and the pet with our response team sign up program. The link is list at the bottom of this article.
Our pets are family and the Hurricane Response Team has always made a place for them. In the past, they were stationed in the Community room, but we have found that when the clubhouse loses power after a storm, and it will, but then the generator kicks in. The generator will cool the main areas of the clubhouse, but not the community room. A decision was made to move the pets into the Craft Room for any future hurricane sheltering. The Craft room will serve as a registration point in the beginning and then become the pet shelter area once everyone is inside. We have room for approximately 50 pets.
Greg Plank is our OCD “Noah’s Arc administrator” of schematics and he has a plan for your pets. But first we need to know how many pets to expect. You must be registered to stay in the shelter and then register up to two pets per household. You are responsible to bring a crate for them to stay inside and a sheet or blanket to cover the crate along with a leash, food and water dish. The pets will be allowed one group potty break if weather permitting before we need to close the doors permanently until after the hurricane has passed.
We plan to have space for you to visit with them often, but there will be a cut off time in the evening. Someone will always be with your pet. A sign up pet patrol sheet will be available for volunteers to take turns in the room. Check with your vet about some mild sedation if you think that will help. You will not be allowed to sleep with your pets nor them with you so you might want some sedation for yourself, see your physician about that.
To those who need to go to a Special Medical Needs Shelter and live here in Tanglewood, get in touch with me, Pam Batey, and we will allow your pet to stay here in the clubhouse shelter so you can go to a Special Needs Facility where you will have free medical care provided that we can’t provide here. We want you to feel safe knowing your pet is safe too.
