Hurricane Shelter Reservation

Published on

On Monday Morning, June 1st the sponsor for Monday Morning Coffee will be Tanglewood Community Church’s pastor, Bill Burnham.  He will explain how the Tanglewood Hurricane Rapid Response Team came to be and some of the first steps you need to take to prepare for a hurricane because……

It’s that time of year again. Hurricane Season officially begins June 1 and tentatively ends Nov, 30th. There are three options to consider when living here in Tanglewood.

OPTION 1 – EVACUATION
 – Evacuation is always the safest thing to do. Get out of here and head North, but do it early, or you may get caught up in a traffic jam or worse, run out of fuel along the way.

OPTION 2 – CLUBHOUSE SHELTER

Stay here in Tanglewood and register to shelter in the Certified Hurricane Safe Clubhouse. As a resident, this is one BIG amenity and it is PRIVATE. No outside public is invited or allowed to shelter here. The Clubhouse was built to withstand a Category 4 Hurricane. It has a Huge Generator that must pass inspection yearly. The large half moon windows at either end are also Hurricane rated windows so they do not need to be covered. All other windows will be covered with hurricane safe protection when the time comes to prepare the building.  Capacity is 1400+ according to the fire marshal. That would include using every room.

OPTION 3 – STAY IN YOUR HOME

If you are going to stay here in Tanglewood, it seems like the smart thing to do is stay inside the Hurricane Shelter located less than a mile from your home. Although, some  people feel safe in their own homes either under the covers of the bed or the bathtub. Our homes are well built, better than any other manufactured home. BUT, should something like ‘Irma’ decide to drop down instead of just ‘eyeing us‘,  and scoop up some of our ponds to get momentum to lift the homes nearby.  Dorothy and Toto come to mind.

Are you ready for that? Spiritually? Mentally? Physically? Flying high above the ground might be okay, it’s that gravitational pull back down to earth or water, as you realize the straps underneath your home are now in Orlando. The decision is yours, whether to stay in your home or go to the clubhouse shelter or evacuate, it’s all up to you.

For our residents who have Special Medical Needs, Highland’s County opens up  Special Needs Shelters in several places throughout the county when a hurricane is immanent. It is for those who need electricity in some form for survival, like C-PAP, Bi-PAP, Oxygen, Dialysis. They also have nurses, technicians, and other medical staff to stay with you. We hope to have a speaker come to Monday Coffee soon to explain how that program works because our Tanglewood shelter is not equipped to handle those needs.

Okay, enough scary stories.

The link will be ‘LIVE’ on Thursday after the Hurricane Drill………. But the paper registration forms should be ready Monday morning, June 1st. , located on the Credenza beside a red box to return the completed paperwork. One front side is for residents, the back side is for your pets.

CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW TO RESERVE A PLACE TO STAY IN THE CLUBHOUSE AND the first 100 who sign up will be offered a POOL LOUNGE CHAIR.
