THE KINGDOM LIFE (Part 4)

“Forgive as You Have Been Forgiven”

Matthew 18:21–35

Introduction: Today Jesus takes us into one of the most difficult places in the Christian life: What do kingdom people do when somebody hurts them? In Matthew 18, Peter came to Jesus and asked how often he should forgive a brother who sins against him. Jesus told him a story of a man who was forgiven an enormous debt to illustrate our big idea: Forgiveness is essential to kingdom life and healthy relationships.

“DO UNTO OTHERS”

Matthew 7:12

The Golden Rule embodies kingdom ethics.

Introduction: We normally call Matthew 7:12 “The golden Rule”

What is especially important in Matthew is the rule’s placement inside Jesus’ kingdom teaching and His identification of it with the ethical thrust of Scripture. Matthew’s wording presents it as a sweeping command governing the disciple’s treatment of others. We know it, we can quote it, but we don’t always live it. What would it look like if we obeyed this command? I see four movements and each one comes straight out of the mouth of Jesus.

Salt And Light: Influence Through Love

(Matthew 5:13–16)

Believers influence through visible goodness and kindness.

Introduction: Last week Jesus described Kingdom Character. Now He shows how that character becomes Kingdom Influence. Salt changes what it touches. Light changes the darkness around it.

The Beatitudes: Kingdom Character

Matthew 5:1–12

Introduction: Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with character. The Beatitudes describe the kind of people we are becoming when Jesus is truly King. Kingdom character begins on the inside and changes how we live and relate to others. Christlike character forms relational integrity.
